Came here after reading a late interview with the late great Chris Curtis ( the Searchers) who mentioned this as a Northern Soul single by Dusty.

The song was a big No. 1 hit for Frankie Valli in 1975. According to Wikepedia this song was originally recorded by the Four Seasons in early 1974. After the Motown label balked at the idea of releasing it, the recording was sold to the lead singer of the group Frankie Valli for 4.000 dollars. The song was released by the Stock Private Records, but the owner wanted only Vall's name on the label. The single was released in the US in November of 1974 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1975. The song is sometimes included on the Four Seasons compilation albums. The song became Valli's first No. 1 hit in USA and revived the career of the group. It became an evergreen and was recerded by many acts.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote many classics which are known to the general public but they also wrote plenty of tremendous songs that remain virtually unknown, this being one of them. Dionne Warwick's original version from around 1967 or 68 is definitely worth checking out.

This is the first time I heard this song and liked it from the start. In my opinion, "Poet" is just as good as "You Were on my Mind". The more I discover about We Five, the more I realize how many other great tunes they have.

I was a senior in high school 1971, back then the cool thing to do on Friday night was to go to the heliport behind Ilikai hotel park then walk on the sand grounds of Hilton Hawaiian Village up to the big open picture glass window to watch Liz Damon's O.E. with Kerry Chun, Sydette Sakaue, Nani Serra. All the high schools students would gather on the beach sit and enjoy the show. The clip w/them wearing blue, exactly how they look! Memories of life in the tropics...
